Your International Exchange Experience is Waiting…
BC High is currently offering four seminar exchange opportunities for the 2013-2014 school year - China, Argentina, France and Ireland. As we strive to supplement our students’ classroom experience, and instill in them strong Jesuit values, there seems to be no greater way to facilitate this development than by providing multifaceted, educationally based opportunities globally. All programs are academic based, but offer unlimited opportunities to explore a country’s culture, language and traditions as well. Academic credit is offered through BC High. For more information on each program, click on the links above.
Program Participation
Participation in all programs is by application, which can be found in the box to the right. Students wishing to participate in the Buenos Aires and France summer seminars must be enrolled Spanish or French respectively, or having a working foundation of the language. The cost for the 2013-2014 programs can be found by clicking on the link above for each specific program (Final cost is based on program participation). Need-based financial aid is available in an effort to make this experience affordable for any student who wishes to participate. For further information please see Mr. Carmody or contact him at carmody@bchigh.edu.
Becoming a Host Family
We have found that BC High students who host an exchange student in their home prior to participating in an international seminar have the most fulfilling experience. For this reason, it is the expectation of all students who hope to travel abroad to first serve as a host family (exceptions are made for reasonable circumstances). However, participation in an exchange program is not a prerequisite for hosting and we often have the need for additional families. We encourage all interested families to host an exchange student as it often serves as a great introduction to our programs! Orientation to hosting is provided by BC High. Visit the Program Downloads box to the right for the Host Family Form with FAQs about hosting.
Academic Credit
All exchange seminars receive .5 credit that will be officially listed on the student’s transcript and will be used when factoring a student’s cumulative GPA. Guidelines for assignments and grading will be reviewed in pre-trip meetings. Students should expect to complete pre-trip readings and assignments. Please note that the credit offered does not replace any required classes at BC High.
Financial Aid
Need-based financial aid is available in an effort to make exchange experiences affordable for any student who wishes to participate. Should you wish to apply for financial aid, simply check the box indicating so on the program application. Financial aid is generally, but not always, linked to the amount of financial aid a student receives at BC High. ALL students are encouraged to apply regardless of any perceived financial limitations. For further information please see Mr. Carmody or contact him at carmody@bchigh.edu.
The BC High Experience
When exchange groups come to Boston, they partake in the BC High Experience—a 2 to 4-week academic-based program that offers diverse opportunities for hands-on learning. Students participate in a mix of BC High classes as well as custom tailored theme lessons designed specifically for our international guests. Learning outside of the classroom takes the form of educational excursions to museums, historical sites, and other cultural attractions in the Boston area. Keeping in the theme of cura personalis each BC High experience includes a service component and spiritual reflection as well as diverse activities that promote social interaction with BC High students. |
