Dear Fellow Members of the BC High Community,
It is with a grateful heart that I write this final letter as the Chair of the Boston College High School Board of Trustees. I am very happy that I am going to be able to devote my full attention to working as CPE Supervisor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital here in Boston. I am also delighted that I will continue to live on campus and be an active part of the Jesuit community at BC High.
I was called last year to the work of school governance and the role of Chair of the newly reconstituted Board. That gave me the opportunity to work with a truly outstanding group of individuals who have worked tirelessly to advance the mission of our beloved school. We have accomplished some very exciting and meaningful milestones for the school. I am very pleased that we were able to work cohesively as a team and unanimously pass substantial changes in policies and procedures. In addition, we were able to hire Grace Cotter Regan as our incoming President in August of last year. Grace brings years of educational Catholic and Jesuit experience to her role as she continues implementing the mission of educating our young men in the Jesuit tradition and with core Ignatian values. Our mission and its implementation set us apart.
As is common with Board progression, including here at BC High, the current Vice Chair of the Board becomes Chair and the Secretary moves up to Vice Chair, I am delighted to announce that Kelly Mason Verrochi, P’15 has been elected and has agreed to serve as Chair for the remainder of my term, and Timothy O’Donnell, ’83, has also been elected to become the Vice Chair. Kelly, Tim and I have worked as a team since the reconstitution of the Board and I am thankful for their support. Also, the Provincial has recently made changes in the USA Northeast Province of which BC High is a part and has appointed a new Superior and a new delegate for BC High. Father James P. Croghan S.J. will replace me as Superior. Father Croghan has served as Rector of the Xavier Jesuit Community in New York since December of 2012. He has extensive administrative experience in secondary education and is seasoned at leading communal discernment.
Reverend Michael C. McFarland, S.J. has been appointed as the Provincial’s delegate to the BC High Board of Trustees. Rev. McFarland, S.J., a computer scientist with extensive liberal arts teaching experience and a special interest in the intersection of technology and ethics, served as the 31st president of the College of the Holy Cross from 2000 to 2012. Father McFarland replaces Meg Florentine who has devoted 15 years to providing distinguished service to the schools of New England and then the Northeast Province. Her experience has been invaluable to us at BC High given her knowledge of and interactions with other Jesuit schools.
This letter is timed to coincide with the Provincial’s appointment of the two new Jesuit ex-officios assuming their roles as active Trustees this month. They will undergo a robust Trustee orientation which was a key component of our governance review. We are very lucky to have not one, but two Jesuits steeped in our traditions and with a wealth of broad educational and administrative experience. Throughout this process, we have worked closely with the Provincial, and we appreciate his unwavering support.
I hope that you will join me in welcoming and praying for these individuals as they assume their new roles. On behalf of the entire school community, I would also like to express our collective thanks for the dedication, hard work and volunteer spirit of all of our Board members. Their substantial efforts and dedication to Boston College High School have helped our school to become the thriving, diverse, and welcoming educational community that is BC High in the 21st century.
Reverend Brian Conley, S.J.
