Arrupe Advisory

Seventh and eighth grades are critical years for boys as they face the physical, emotional, and academic transition into adolescence. In the tradition of the Ignatian exercise, cura personalis (Latin for “care of the whole person”), the Arrupe Division is built around a strong advisory program that provides students with the support that they need as they develop academically, emotionally, and socially.
The boys are organized into groups of twelve advisees with an advisor whom they see daily in homeroom and for longer periods every other week. The weekly advisory period allows for a wide range of activities including:

  • Individual meetings of the student and advisor
  • Discussions of school and adolescent issues
  • Digital citizenship lessons
  • Explorations of Ignatian values
  • Activities designed to build stronger ties among students and between the students and their advisors
Working with the guidance counselors and school administration, the advisors develop and implement an advisory curriculum that helps the students to explore strategies for handling individual as well as general adolescent challenges, and to help the boys find their way to becoming “young men of competence, conscience, and compassion.”

Open to Growth

Being a part of an advisory group allows each student to identify with his peers and feel that he belongs to that group. It gives him an adult who has a more immediate role in his life, a teacher who will look out for the student, advocate for the student, and challenge the student.
