How BC High Supports Emotional Well Being for Students

Written by Deb Martin | Apr 6, 2026 9:59:59 AM

At BC High, student emotional well being is central to both academic success and personal growth. We know that pre-teen and teenage boys need to be nurtured and challenged to engage in learning, build relationships, and navigate challenges with confidence.

Our approach to emotional well being for students is shaped by the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis, or care for the whole person. Our commitment to holistic growth supports student intellectual development without de-prioritizing emotional, health and wellness programming. In addition to our whole person educational approach, relationships with faculty and staff support and guide students every step of the way.

A Whole Person Approach Rooted in Cura Personalis

At BC High, we understand that emotional well being is connected to academic performance. Cura personalis takes a whole person approach to support emotional, physical, social, and intellectual development. Emotional well being is embedded in our academic approach, and students are encouraged to grow not only as learners, but as self aware, compassionate individuals.

Knowing Students Beyond the Classroom

Faculty and staff at BC High take time to know students as individuals. Classrooms are small enough that teachers can get to know each student individually. Through advising, mentoring, and daily interactions, adults build relationships that help students feel seen, valued, and supported.

These personal connections not only help boys feel seen, but also help them better retain course material. As a result of these connections, our educators can recognize when a student may be struggling and offer meaningful guidance.

Creating a Culture of Care and Respect

BC High’s culture is grounded in respect, empathy, and accountability. Students learn the importance of caring for themselves and others, which strengthens emotional well being and reinforces a sense of belonging.

This culture encourages students to speak up, seek help, and support peers as part of a connected community.

Health and Wellness as a Core Component of Student Life

BC High’s robust selection of co-curricular activities are designed to promote balance and resilience, while cultivating sustainable habits. They are also intentionally structured to expose students to a wide range of opportunities, encouraging them to explore new areas and develop or deepen their interests. These programs help students engage with other members of the school community, supporting emotional well-being throughout the school year.

Physical Health and Emotional Balance

Physical activity plays a key role in supporting emotional health. Athletics, wellness and fitness opportunities, and movement-based activities help students manage stress and regulate their emotions. At BC High, we encourage students’ emotional well being through physical activity and through teaching students about healthy routines around sleep, nutrition, and activity—reinforcing the connection between physical health and emotional well being. Through an emphasis on physical well being, BC High helps students learn to manage their emotions more effectively.

Wellness Education and Preventive Support

Wellness education at BC High equips students with practical skills for managing stress and maintaining balance. Through age appropriate programming, students learn self awareness, emotional regulation, and healthy decision making. These programs help students learn to identify challenges so they can recognize problems early and respond with intention.

Counseling and Student Support Services

BC High provides professional counseling and student support resources, ensuring students have access to support when they need it.

Access to School Counselors and Support Staff

Students have access to school counselors and trained support staff who are available to help with academic, social, and emotional concerns. More than simply a resource, this support is integrated into the student experience and school curriculum, ensuring that every student regularly engages with trusted adults. These counselors and staff offer guidance, listening, and problem-solving support in a confidential and compassionate setting.

Proactive and Responsive Support Systems

BC High emphasizes early intervention and proactive care. When signs of stress or emotional difficulty arise, support systems respond quickly to help students manage challenges before they become overwhelming. Faculty, advisors, coaches, and other trusted adults interact with our students daily. When a student is experiencing stress or facing challenging emotions, they come together to offer support and guidance.

Building Emotional Skills for Long Term Success

The goal of emotional well being for students at BC High extends beyond middle and high school. Emotional intelligence and regulation are critical to lifelong success, and BC High students are guided to develop the emotional skills that will support them in college, careers, and life.

Encouraging Reflection and Emotional Awareness

Reflection is an important part of the Jesuit tradition. Through daily practices and retreats, students are encouraged to identify emotions, reflect on experiences, and consider how their choices affect themselves and others. This practice of intentional reflection strengthens emotional awareness and supports thoughtful decision making.

Supporting Resilience and Healthy Coping

BC High helps students build resilience by teaching healthy coping strategies and encouraging students to have a broader perspective. With BC High’s supportive community, students learn how to handle setbacks, manage pressure, and grow through challenges with confidence. These skills contribute to lasting emotional well being and personal strength.

BC High centers emotional well being for students in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis. Combined with comprehensive health and wellness support, BC High creates an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally. Through relationships, education, reflection, and proactive care, students are empowered to develop balance and resilience, building a strong foundation for lifelong well being.
