Choosing the right kind of school for your son is a deeply personal decision that can shape his life for years to come. BC High is a private day school for boys in Boston. Centered in the Jesuit tradition, our values-based educational approach is distinct among boys’ private schools. At BC High, education extends beyond the classroom to cultivate young men of integrity, intellect, compassion, and commitment.
For many families, BC High’s Jesuit, Catholic day school experience offers the best of both worlds: students receive a rigorous, values-based education during the day and return home in the evening. This balance nurtures independence and connection, both equally important as boys enter their teenage years and prepare for college.
What is the Difference Between a Private Day School and a Boarding School?
Unlike boarding school students, students at day schools don’t live on campus. After a day of classes, sports, and club meetings, BC High students go home to their families. Boarding school students live in dorms on campus, only returning home during scheduled breaks in the academic year.
A typical day at BC High starts with morning prayer, followed by academic classes. When classes end in the afternoon, students may pursue over 100 co-curricular activities. BC High has offerings in athletics, the arts, and much more.
How BC High Supports Family Involvement in Education
A private day school like BC High helps keep families involved in their son’s life and education. Because our students return home each evening, parents remain active partners in their sons’ growth and part of our community. We support parents through regular communication, family-focused events, and a welcoming campus culture. From parent forums and athletic games to faith-based gatherings and service opportunities, BC High offers countless ways for families to share in the life of the school.
This close collaboration complements the unique sense of brotherhood that defines our student experience. The connections students make at BC High are highly impactful, and the BC High Brotherhood continues into college and beyond. At BC High, students make lifelong friendships defined by accountability and a spirit of belonging.
BC High’s House System Creates Bonds and Brotherhood
Created in 2022, our unique house system creates a sense of belonging on campus by creating smaller communities within the school. Empirical research and centuries of boys-school experience both point to the same reality: boys learn best when they’re connected to the adults and students around them.
Houses are made up of approximately 90 students and led by a faculty member known as the Head of House. These smaller advisory groups create spaces where students can be known deeply, forge strong friendships, and connect with students across different grade levels. Our house system is exclusively for our high school students—our model for pastoral care and support in middle school is through advisory groups and homeroom.
How to Choose What’s Best for Your Child
When considering what kind of school is best for your son, it’s important to consider his unique needs, desires, and interests to best choose the environment where he will thrive.
Families should consider the following criteria when selecting a school for their son:
- The Student’s Maturity Level
Boys mature at different rates, especially in their pre-teen and teenage years. Identifying your son’s maturity level can help you assess how a rigorous Jesuit education would impact his growth. - Unique Educational Goals
Understanding your son’s strengths, weaknesses, and educational goals can help you decide what kind of school would best help him achieve those goals. - Family Values
Every family has different values. Many families value maintaining a close connection with their son during his middle and high school years as they continue to help shape their child’s growth.
For academically motivated boys who seek a rigorous education, BC High offers the opportunity to reap the benefits of an exceptional private school education while staying connected with home and family life.
